The Foundation Course

The foundation course is a primer in the fundamentals of Buddhism using traditional and contemporary sources.

You do not have to describe yourself as a Buddhist to participate on this course. Our appreciation of buddhism may be as simple as enjoying the peacefulness of a Buddha statue in a garden.

It is preferable that you do have an experience of the meditations that we teach (Mindfulness and metta) otherwise the ideas on the course can remain mere abstractions.

The main aim of this course is to help people to improve their lives and mental states, rather than to give information about Buddhism for intellectual interest. But to practice the Dharma we need to know the Dharma, and Buddhist ideas have a transformative effect in their own right, by changing the way we see the world, and therefore the way we feel and act.

Ethics, or how we conduct ourselves in the light of our ideals, is the first transformative stage of the path. It leads to a less stressful life and aids in the preparation for meditation and insight.
